Monthly TV Data Insights - August 2021

In this article, MUSO’s data insights team highlights trends observed in the most recent TV piracy audience data.

As a general trend, visits to TV piracy websites have increased by over 20% in the first six months of 2021 compared to the first 6 months of 2020. MUSO tracked over 41 billion visits to TV piracy sites during this period.

Of this traffic, 94% visited unlicensed streaming websites with public torrent networks only accounting for 2.9% of traffic.

The most popular TV show with piracy audiences was Loki S1, which accounted for 40% of piracy consumption of the top 10 TV titles for June 2021, largely driven by audience demand in Brazil and the US.

Rick and Morty Season 5 was officially released on June 20th and was available via the piracy networks on the same day. Despite only having 11 days worth of data, it is the second most in-demand show in June 2021. The new series proved popular with audiences in the US, Mexico, Turkey and the UK. MUSO also measured increased demand of over  25% for the previous seasons when comparing May to June 2021.

In the UK, Sci-Fi series’ occupied  8 out of the top 10 places.

There are two Netflix titles in the global TV piracy top 10, Elite Season 4 and Sweet Tooth Season 1. Sweet Tooth Season 1, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama, was released on June 4th and saw the most demand from Germany where it was the second most popular title behind Loki.

MUSO’s analysis indicates that piracy demand for TV content is increasing month on month and with many new and exclusive productions slated for release this year, MUSO expects to see this trend continue.
