MUSO’s Global Piracy Insights Report 2017, is the music industry’s trusted annual insights & statistics report on the developing global piracy market. This years report reveals a shift towards mobile music streaming, overtaking desktop streaming during 2016, as well as showing the continued rise in the popularity of stream rippers.

  • 34.2 billion visits to music piracy sites throughout 2016
  • 52% of all visits to piracy sites in 2017 were through mobile devices, up 6% during the year
  • From January 2016 to December 2016, 13.8 billion visits to websites were to stream pirated content, 60% of this piracy streaming activity was via mobile devices
  • 2016 saw the continued rise of stream ripper sites, used primarily for downloading MP3’s from YouTube music videos, overtaking web downloads to become the second largest form of online music piracy
  • Despite these changes in behavior, piracy levels remained relatively static throughout the year, with a 6% overall decline

Analysing the entire piracy market for music

2016 demonstrated an increasing behavioral shift towards mobile streaming piracy. These figures were drawn through analysis of global traffic from over 23,000 of the largest global piracy websites, comprising of over 191 billion visits to these sites.

Following the trends towards mobile music streaming piracy, stream ripper piracy from mobile devices overtook desktop devices, growing by 11% last year. The usage of these stream ripping sites has proved to be far larger than many realised, making up 23% of all visits to piracy sites for music content.
